Understanding the Two Types of Cleaning

When you hire a professional cleaning service, you'll typically be asked to choose between a "regular cleaning" and a "deep cleaning." While these terms are used widely across the cleaning industry, many homeowners aren't sure what the actual difference is — or which one they need. Here's a clear breakdown.

What Is Regular Cleaning?

Regular cleaning — sometimes called "maintenance cleaning" or "standard cleaning" — is designed to maintain your home's cleanliness on an ongoing basis. It covers the everyday surfaces and high-traffic areas that need attention most frequently.

A typical regular cleaning includes:

Kitchen: Wiping countertops, cleaning the stovetop surface, scrubbing the sink, exterior of appliances, sweeping and mopping the floor
Bathrooms: Cleaning the toilet, shower/tub, sink, vanity, mirrors, and mopping the floor
Living areas & bedrooms: Vacuuming carpets and rugs, mopping hard floors, dusting surfaces, wiping light switches and door handles, making beds, emptying trash

Regular cleaning is best for homes that are already in reasonably good shape and just need consistent upkeep. Most families schedule this weekly or bi-weekly.

What Is Deep Cleaning?

Deep cleaning goes significantly further. It's a thorough, intensive cleaning that targets the dirt, grime, and buildup that accumulates over time in areas that regular cleaning doesn't reach.

A deep cleaning typically includes everything in a regular cleaning, plus:

Inside appliances: Oven interior, refrigerator shelves, microwave, dishwasher
Behind and under: Behind the toilet, under the stove, behind the refrigerator, under furniture
Detail work: Baseboard scrubbing, door frame wiping, window sill cleaning, ceiling fan dusting, vent covers
Bathroom extras: Grout scrubbing, tile descaling, shower door detailing, fixture polishing
Kitchen extras: Cabinet front wiping, range hood degreasing, under-sink cleaning

Deep cleaning takes significantly longer than a regular clean — often 4 to 8 hours depending on the size of your home and how long it's been since the last deep clean.

When Should You Choose Each?

Choose regular cleaning if:

- Your home is already clean and you want to maintain it

- You have a busy schedule and want someone to keep things tidy

- You're setting up a recurring cleaning routine (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly)

Choose deep cleaning if:

- You haven't had a professional cleaning in over 3 months

- You're preparing for a special event or guests

- You're moving in or out of a home

- Your home has visible buildup (grout discoloration, greasy stovetops, dusty vents)

- You want a seasonal "reset" for your entire home

The Best of Both Worlds

Many of our clients at Care Touch combine both services: they schedule regular bi-weekly cleaning for ongoing maintenance, and add a deep cleaning every 3 to 6 months to reset the harder-to-reach areas. This combination keeps your home consistently clean without the stress of tackling everything at once.

We serve families across Silver Spring, Bethesda, Rockville, Washington DC, Arlington, and the broader DMV area. Every visit is backed by our Liberty Mutual insurance, and we use only eco-friendly, non-toxic products.
